The Metropolitan Opera’s opening night is a star-studded affair. Think Christine Baranski, Ellen Burstyn, Julianna Margulies, Sophia Bush, Laverne Cox, Hamish Linklater and Lily Rabe, Neil Patrick Harris, Gina Gershon and B.J Novak, to name just a few. It’s the world premiere of Mason Bates’ “The Amazing Adventure of Kavalier & Clay,” based on Michael Chabon’s novel about two Jewish cousins penning comics in the shadow of World War II. I’m not the biggest fan of opera in English, but this one is great. Senator Chuck Schumer takes the stage before the performance, announcing that the arts are “under attack.” By the end of the evening, the Metropolitan Opera raises over 4 million dollars. – ALEXANDER HANKIN
