“More is more and less is a bore” was a trademark quote of the fabulously stylish Iris Apfel — American businesswoman, interior decorator, fashion designer and model (a career begun at age 97!). Apfel was of course an outspoken personality known for her oversized eyeglasses, layers of jewelry, and her own inimitable brand of New York glamour.
Though she passed away at 102 last year, Apfel’s bigger than life presence made an appearance on the Upper East Side recently at Inspīr Carnegie Hill, the ultra-luxury modern senior living community. Doyle Auctioneers & Appraisers held a private preview for Inspīr residents before their auction of her estate earlier this month.
Items in the “More is More and Less is a Bore” auction were sourced mainly from Apfel’s residence in Palm Beach. Her playful glamour, unapologetic maximalism and love of a bold kaleidoscope of color was on display at Inspīr, where over 30 style-mavens-in-residence enjoyed a presentation given by Doyle about the life and times of the fashion icon.
The event was part of an ongoing collaboration with Doyle. The collaboration offered a unique way for Inspīr residents – many of whom are art collectors – to stay connected with their passions.
